It may come as a surprise that the gel coat on a boat’s hull is actually a porous surface. It has millions of tiny holes in it that can fill with microscopic debris and water-dwelling organisms. If these contaminants are not cleaned out from time to time, they will cause oxidation and an overall dulling of the surface. The oxidation looks like white chalk and it will cause colored portions of the hull to appear faded. The only way to prevent this is to polish your boat and then protect it with wax.

Apply #45 Marine/RV Polish with a machine polisher, like the Porter Cable 7424XP, for best results. Use a white polishing pad and work at a speed between 3000-4000 OPM, or 1000-1200 RPM on an orbital polisher. When the polish starts to dry, turn off the machine and buff away the haze with a microfiber towel. Clean up your used pads and towels in a solution of DP Polishing Pad Rejuvenator and water. The strong citrus cleaner will release polish from foam and microfiber to prolong the life of your detailing tools.
